Removing bamboo clumps and running bamboo

Rapidly growing and invasive bamboo is one of the toughest problems that you may have to deal with as a homeowner. Not only is it extremely invasive, but it also forms a complex as well as unpredictable network of underground roots as the times passes, which means that you will never know as to where a new culm may shoot out from. This also makes removing the invasive bamboo a tough and daunting task, since just cutting it off at the ground level is not enough. There are majorly two types of bamboo growths, clumping and running bamboo. Read on to know the methods of how to remove bamboo growing in either of these patterns, and what are the best ways and alternatives to killing bamboo.

Getting rid of clumping bamboo

What makes removal of clumping bamboo comparatively simpler is its confinement to the area where it was planted at first, which also makes it non-invasive bamboo. To remove that, the first step to be performed is to kill all of the canes or the exposed culms. Start by removing those which are closer to the ground level, using regular shears or even a chainsaw if the plants are larger.

Once this is done, you will get ground and open space to work with, and this is where the tough part comes. Bamboo root dig out is what you need to do now, and since most bamboos have thick roots and rhizomes, it can get harder as the plant grows. Using a sharp spade or axe to break up that root system is an easier away. Once it is broken off, removing the remains by hand will be much simpler. Remember to examine and make sure that every rhizome has been removed and there are no leftovers.

Running bamboo and how to remove it

Running bamboos are not only invasive, but can get pretty harder to remove. In order to get started, you will first have to remove the exposed clumps as you did with the clumping bamboo. Being as thorough as possible while you do this is also necessary, so that the bamboo cannot photosynthesize to survive further.

After that is done, you will have to destroy all future growth by regularly monitoring the requisite area, which is a patient task. Remove any emerging shoots as soon as they occur, which will cause the plants to exhaust too much and die. This can take time which varies with the plant's species, level of establishment as well as the climate.

How to kill bamboo culms

If all other methods that tell you how to remove bamboo do not work, then you can also go in for killing the bamboo, which is also a permanent way to get rid of it. This is a way that you must prefer if nothing else works out, for it involves killing bamboo with chemicals. Ensure that after it is done, no new shoots grow out and if they do, remove them as soon as possible.

Thus, either of these ways, if applied correctly, can help you get rid of that bamboo problem once and for all!
