Not all roofs are tiled; indeed a large percentage is but some choose to opt for roofing sheets. The fact is tiles have numerous benefits not the least of which is a beautiful appearance.
Of all the roof tiles made and sold over the years, clay stands out for its many natural protective qualities which are only enhanced during the production process. It also has its drawbacks which are only a few but beg looking into.
It's extremely long-lasting
In the right conditions, clay can last for hundreds of years. Being baked in the sun has little bearing on durability because the tiles are fired in kilns under extremely high temperatures. With a clay roof, you can be assured excellent durability and will recover the cost in no time.
Despite being durable, clay is brittle so trim overhanging branches and don't let children lob balls on the roof during boisterous play. If you can do this you won't have to repair or replace tiles for the next 75 years or so. That's a very long time.
There's a variety of styles and colors
Most of the clay rooftops we know of feature the signature red color so often seen in Spanish houses. However, if you don't like it or want something a little contemporary, you can choose a different color and even a different profile. The barrel style is the commonest and the most popular but there's also interlocking tiles and shingles. Just browse the designs on offer and you'll be surprised by how versatile clay tiles are.
Clay is fire-resistant
Clay takes time to burn because it's produced under very hot temperatures. This means it spreads slower too. As we all know, one of the reasons fires can be so devastating is because building materials burn so easily. With clay, you get precious time to escape or put out a fire before it spreads.
Has waterproof qualities
The glazing process done after tiles have been made helps strengthen them and even waterproofs them by plugging in pores. Naturally, constant exposure to rain will ultimately see the tiles suffer damage but for the most part, you won't have a problem. Glaze also alters color to make it more vibrant or changes it completely for visual appeal.
It's 100 recyclable!
There are other roofing materials that are recyclable, of course, but clay can be recycled to be used in different projects. It can be used for roofing or in the manufacture of bricks or in the construction of roads. In fact, the tiles you purchase contain a high percentage of recycled content. It'll give you a good feeling knowing that your investment will continue to benefit others and the environment so opt for clay and contribute to sustainability.
Excellent thermal insulation
Clay is known for its cooling and heating properties. Depending on the weather, hot days should see house interiors maintain lower temperatures which rise to a cozy warmth as outside temperatures dip. With so much spent on heating and cooling needs, it's a welcome benefit with a reduced cost.
Lower maintenance
All roofs require maintenance but the good news with clay tiles is that there's no coating and painting to worry about. Work will be restricted to cleaning venting, gutters and protrusion flashings, not maintaining the entire roof surface.
