Look at them at a glance; you will see vibrant flowers appearing more beautiful especially when they bloom in groups. Every viewer will appreciate a perennial garden bed with full bloomed flowers. You too can practise the basic landscaping ideas while designing a perennial garden by looking at the following designing tips:
Decide the theme
The first thing that you need to do is to select a theme for your perennial garden. There are many themes that you may want to choose from such as the scented type, water garden, formal tone, butterfly garden or any other theme of your choice. If it is your first time, it is imperative to choose a manageable and attractive theme. You can go for a more complex garden plan once you get knowledge about maintenance regarding different themes.
Plan the width of your beds
Your plan should be laid out according to the area of your yard. While wider beds give more flexibility for your design, it is imperative to know that very wide beds can be difficult to handle because you won't make it reaching plants that are in the middle. Avoid many narrow flower beds as they will bring a crowded appearance. A good dimension for your bed should be between eight and ten feet.
Select the flowers
The most crucial step for designing a perennial flower garden is the selection of a variety of plants. Select plants based on their required growing conditions so that they grow and bloom in your garden. It is also important to consider color, length of blooming, height, and flowering time of the plants when selecting your plants. However, don't choose a plant just because you like its size or color; rather consider growth, maintenance level and its suitability.
Create a color scheme
Prior to creating a color scheme, you can sort out your plants according to the size, color and blooming time. Take note of the light requirements especially while grouping these plants. You can group flowers of different colors in odd numbers such as a cluster of three that comes with varied colors. For your information, cool colors include blue, pink, white and purple, while warm colors are orange, red and yellow.
Plantation pattern
The rule of thumb for growing perennial plants is to place the short varieties in the front row and tall plants at the back. Short plants include phlox and dianthus while tall ones are peony and iris just to name a few. Eighteen inch tall flowers should be placed in the front section, three feet tall plants in the middle and the five feet perennial plants at the back. You will enjoy all these plants even if they are of different heights. You also want to be creative when designing your flower bed, so add other garden accessories such as hostas, ferns, bushes, ornamental grass or anything that can help enhance the look
