The Best Ways To Look After Your Lawn

Your garden is a sanctuary of verdant green shrubbery, colourful flowers and towering trees. So why ruin it with a weedy, undernourished lawn? This article will give you some of the best tips to keep your lawn healthy, bright and nourished.

Aerate your lawn

Before you get stuck in and start pulling weeds out, cutting the grass and pouring copious amounts of water onto it, you first need to nourish the soil underneath. This will make sure that when the grass begins to grown again, you will have given it the healthiest possible start. Over time, the soil will begin to compress under the impact of your feet, which interrupts with air circulation, water drainage and nutrient absorption. To solve this problem, all you need to do is punch holes into the soil around 3 inches deep. This will help your grass to make better use of water and essential nutrients and will enable organisms to grow and nourish your soil. There are a few different ways of aerating your soil, with one of them being the use of an aerating machine that you can hire from any good hardware store. The second way is to use a handheld aerating tool which is perfect if you have a small lawn to cover.

Tidying & Cutting

The next stage is to tidy your lawn by pulling out unnecessary weeds and unwanted plantation. If you are worried about leaving holes in your lawn, then a simple weed killing spray will do the trick. However, be careful that you don't spray your grass too much as it can be harmful to the blades. Once you have cleaned the lawn of unsightly weeds, the next step is to cut the grass. By doing this often, you allowing newer healthier grass reach the top of blade quicker, resulting in fresher and brighter grass. Leave the grass for a few hours before moving on to the next stage.

Watering your grass

Simply spraying your grass with water once in a while won't be enough to give you luscious blades! However, if you water your grass on a regular basis, making sure you are getting deep into the roots, it won't be long before your garden reaps the benefits. To ensure the roots of your grass are getting a deep nourishing drink, you need to feed it enough water to create an inch of water on the surface of the soil. To do this, leave a few shallow containers out while you water your lawn, and wait for the containers to reach a water level of about an inch and there you have it! When the soil has around 3-4 inches of dry-to-touch soil on the surface, it is time to re-start the process again.

Fertilise

The last tip is to fertilise your grass. Make sure that you are using a natural fertiliser, as these are better for your lawn and the environment. We recommend using local sources of horticultural dry molasses for a natural alternative.

By following these simple tips and you will have the perfect lawn in no time!
