Industrial fences are very different from those used in residential areas because the level of security needed is higher, aesthetics matter less and the area to cover is much larger. The quality of the fences too is superior as they must meet all requirements flawlessly.
Three types of fences have proven to be very effective in keeping trespassers and wildlife out and not costing a bundle. Chain link and mesh are two of the most popular styles while security fences go a step further in accomplishing every need. They're typically more expensive so you're likely to find the other two more commonly used.
Attributes of chain link fences
Chain link fences may not look like much but they're great at keeping wild animals away. They can do the same for trespassers too as long as they're built to sufficient heights and are thicker and difficult to damage than those meant for residential use.
Most chain link fences are made of galvanized steel. The metal is strong, we all know, and it holds up well even against freezing weather. It's important to point out that such fences, like all others, can be cut and broken into by determined trespassers but repair is a lot easier. Since plants and factories cover a large area and their perimeters are subject to several entry points (intentional or otherwise), they're more prone to damage. Repair is, therefore, an ongoing process so cost-effectiveness must be a factor.
Attributes of mesh fences
Mesh fences are similar to chain links in that the wires are joined together. They differ, however, in terms of shape and meshes have smaller gaps between the wires. This makes them more efficient against small wild animals or trespassers looking to gain a foothold in the fence.
Like chain links, mesh fences are often used not only to secure perimeters but also to close off sections of work sites. Depending on necessity, the gaps between the wires may range from over an inch to several millimeters wide. This range in configuration can't be achieved with chain link unless the wire circumference is very small in which case the fence's strength would decrease.
Attributes of security fences
Security fences can be a combination of chain link and mesh fences or may have other attributes that increase security. Barbed wire, for example, is often used to deter not only people from climbing over but also birds from perching.
The construction of security fences differs from other types of fencing with angles formed at odd junctures, spikes placed in areas that may otherwise serve as a handhold or foothold etc. Many and more designs are applied and customization is also possible if more intricate patterns or heavier gauge steel/iron is required.
Aside from construction, height plays a very important role in effectively keeping intruders away. Thicker wires make cutting difficult especially when heavily meshed so getting through is not easy. Irrespective of what type of fence is chosen, the design must be such that it's able to hold up well under human impact, wildlife attempts at entry and the weather. You'll be surprised by how the last factor can weaken fences especially following a bout of wet weather. Going with galvanized steel will minimize the development of rust and corrosion which can eat away at the metal.
