It's possible to give your dying lounge room some much needed resuscitation with cushions. Giving new life with cushions is like purchasing a new handbag or hat, it's simply something that needs to be done every season, or in a pinch - every year. With that in mind, here's some great ways to move around some fabric and create magic.
Cushion Do's and Don'ts
* Always put the darker cushions to the back of the lounge furniture - they highlight and frame the lighter ones at the front.
* Always put bigger cushions to the back - they add texture and depth to corner lounges.
* Stack cushions like an armrest or a pillow against fabric lounges - the whole point is to use them. Don't think of them as precious ornaments. Instead think of them as literally 'part of the furniture'.
Textured Textiles
If you like the whole animal print look, you should go totally wild and combine a range of throw rugs in zebra or leopard print. Combine this along with some black anchor cushions, to frame a leather recliner chair. This combination of black cushions and textured, vibrantly-patterned throws, creates a cosy and homely feeling.
Muted Shades
There's nothing quite like pale fabric lounges, with a contrasting selection of muted or pale throw rugs and cushions. Contrast the fabrics using various different textures. This creates a luxurious, sophisticated look. The muted colours have a calming effect on the brain and create a soft and comforting ambience.
Work in Pairs
When dressing leather lounge suites with additional cushions and throws, try to achieve a sense of balance, with vibrantly patterned pillows at the front, and larger solid-coloured cushions at the back. The colour accents will work well to balance out the sofa.
Different Shapes Add Interest
Instead of using colour or texture as a point of reference, play with the shape of cushions on your sofa. Get a mix of organic and graphic print cushions in round and rectangular shapes. This creates a playful and contemporary look.
Play with Colour
This is where muted and neutral coloured fabric lounges comes in handy. They provides the perfect blank canvas for flamboyant experimentations in colour. Try olive green and burgundy; or fiery orange, pink and magenta.
