How To Control Pests In An Organic Garden

The first mistake new organic gardeners make is actually to try and control pests. They should be asking "How to attract pests" rather than "How to control pests in an organic garden". The reason is that most pests aren’t really pests at all they are eating the true pests. A well set up organic garden should keep it's self pretty well maintained by the checks and balances of a mini Eco system. If you are having trouble in your garden you should first observe then react.

So how do you really know if you need pest control in your organic garden? The first thing to do is observe your plants. By observing plants for several days you can determine just how much damage is being done. If you are new to organic gardening you might be surprised that no damaging is actually being done to your fruits and flowers even if a strange battle is snacking on your leaves.

I always try and observe plants I suspect with of an infestation for three days. During this time I pay close attention to the growth rate and or dieing of a plant. If an insect isn't effecting the growth rate of your plants it's best just to leave it alone. The only time action should really need to be taken is if plants start dieing off to pests. Also as previously mentioned pay attention to the growth rate of your flowers and fruits particularly. If growth is not impeded action can be held off.

After observing and finding that bugs have taken your organic plants hostage, it's time for action. The next step to organic pest control in gardens is to find out what type of pest you have. Usually a simple internet search of a bugs type and what type of plant is infected is enough. Once you know the name of the nasty critter you can easily find a product in your local gardening supply center organic pest control products will be clearly labeled along with a list of the bugs they take care of.

You will want to be extremely careful with these types of organic garden sprays in your garden. Like I have previously explained about 80% of the bugs in your organic garden are actually helping the garden grow and produce. When you use an organic garden bug spray you can not pick and choose which bugs you kill, you simply kill them all in the area.

For those gardeners who are a bit more ambitious you might decided to make your own organic garden bug killer. There are some great recipes online for just such a thing. The wonderful thing about these recipes is that they mostly use items that can already be found in your organic garden. One of the most well known and simple recipes for organic garden pest control is to crush a garlic in water and strain. This mixture can be sprayed on plants of all ages to cure them from a number of pests. Younger plants should be observed when using this mixture and only use for a few days at a time to avoid burn on your weaker plants.
