Top 12 Herbs For Potted Herb Gardens

Basil

Basil is probably the most popular plant for potted herb gardens. There are many varieties of basil available. The most common basil, which is used in Italian cuisine, is sweet basil. Other popular varieties are Genovese, globe, lemon, purple ruffles, and cinnamon. Many indoor herb gardeners prefer to use the compact varieties. Basil should be added to dishes at the very end of cooking to maintain flavor. Probably it’s most popular use is in pesto.

Chervil

This herb has a parsley-like flavor with a hint of licorice and is commonly used in French cuisine. It is used to season soups, stews, eggs, vegetables, chicken, and seafood.

Chives

Chives are the smallest species in the onion family. They mild onion flavor is used to flavor fish, soups, and potatoes. At maturity, it displays beautiful purple globe-like flowers. Unlike many other herbs grown in potted herb gardens, it does not lose its flavor when dry-frozen.

Lemongrass

Parsley

Rosemary

This woody perennial is ideal for seasoning Mediterranean dishes. It’s aromatic, astringent flavor is wonderful with potatoes, breads, and chicken. Since it is a perennial, it is a good idea to set this plant outside during the warm months to give it a change to recharge.

Sage

This plant adds a bit of texture and color to potted herb gardens with its fuzzy, grayish leaves. When the plant matures, it develops purple/blue flowers. Sage is most commonly used to season poultry. Its leaves and branches are also sometimes used in crafts.

Tarragon

Known as one of the four main seasonings in French cooking, tarragon is used to flavor eggs, fish, and meat. It is also an important part of Béarnaise sauce. It is sometimes used as a companion plant because pests dislike its taste. When planted among other plants, all of the plants benefit. This makes it a wonderful addition to potted herb gardens.

Thyme

Thyme is a widely used herb in cooking and contains is a great source of iron. Meats, soups, and stews are flavored with this strong-flavored herb. Because it is slow to release flavor, it is used early in the cooking process.

Vietnamese Coriander

This herb has a cilantro-like flavor, but stronger. It is best used fresh, as drying destroys its flavor. For the best flavor, add to Vietnamese soups and noodle dishes at the end of cooking.
