The Jasminum Nudiflorum tree is the scientific name for 'Jasmine, Winter Variety' or just 'Winter Jasmine'. This type of tree makes an excellent Bonsai tree.
The Jasminum Nudiflorum is a tree that is native to China and flowers (hence the name) in the middle of winter. The flowers are of a bright yellow colour and on a proper (large) tree are about 1 cm long. There are 6 on each petal.
The Jasminum Nudiflorum Bonsai likes full sun. It may need to be shaded slightly in the intense heat and light of the summer months, however it is quite a hardy tree and will stand up to the elements on its own very well.
Pruning should be done immediately after it flowers, that it in early spring. This will ensure that the flowers will grow evenly and that there will be no bare patches of branch on the tree.
As this is an Oriental tree in nature, you can try some Oriental type designs with it. This Jasminum Nudiflorum Bonsai will work well as an informal upright style and it will also look good as a cascade style. The cascade Bonsai style is very Asian in appearance and it will look great in this kind of bent and twisted style. Cascades are perfect for these pot plants.
Always go for a simple pot when growing a Winter Jasmine Bonsai, the simpler the better. I like very earthy colours, un glazed, very simple and minimalist in nature. However of course this decision on which pot to get is always up to you.
Probably the biggest downside to the Jasminum Nudiflorum Bonsai is that it does require a fair bit of maintenance. You will need to water it once a day on average however you can get away with not quite so much in the winter months. If you discover that the soil is dry, you will need to water it straight away - unlike the Cedar Bonsai style, you shouldn't let the soil in the Winter Jasmine tree dry out.
Overall, the Jasminum Nudiflorum Bonsai is a nice tree to turn into a Bonsai. It looks good, especially in Winter and you will enjoy the added colour that it adds to your garden. If you're looking for a low maintenance tree, then perhaps look elsewhere. The Winter Jasmine is a popular tree for a reason, so why not join in the fun and make one too? I promise you that it will be worth it.
