If you are an avid gardener like myself, you might want to consider building your own backyard greenhouse. A greenhouse just makes sense for those who have spent a lot of time on their medium to large gardens. Simply put, there are too many advantages of having your own greenhouse that a gardener cannot rule out the idea. Although it may take up some money and time to complete, in the end your work will certainly pay off. In addition to an enclosed garden, a greenhouse can provide your garden with sufficient sunlight year round whether you live in sunny California or the rainy suburbs of Seattle.
So you may be wondering what a greenhouse actually does? To understand the science behind a greenhouse we must go and revisit our middle school science education. Plants grow and receive energy from the sun light. Through a process called photosynthesis, they are able to convert raw sun light into an energy source. Now because the sun will always come up, the plants will always be able to receive some intake of energy. However, in places around the world, the sun does not shine bright or long enough to grow particular types of plants or vegetables. With a greenhouse, sunlight will be stored in an enclosure for your plants to bask in its radiation waves. This means that you will be able to grow vegetables such as chili peppers, squash and pumpkins!
A greenhouse is made from either wood or aluminum and glass or plastic. So how does something made from those materials keep sun light in? When the light goes through the glass and into the greenhouse, there is a chemical reaction that occurs that changes the structure of the sun light radiation. Before it enters the glass, sun light is a short radiation wave. However, after passing through the glass, it quickly becomes a long radiation wave. The long radiation wave is unable to pass through the glass and back out of the greenhouse, therefore getting stuck in the enclosure.
The enclosure of the greenhouse not only traps in the sun light, but also protects the garden from unwanted insects and animals. How many times have your garden been raided by a stray cat, raccoon or rodent? If you have you know exactly how annoying these pests can be. A physical greenhouse that is sturdy and made from professional greenhouse plans will be able to keep your garden away from just about any animal. Not only will you be able to keep things out, but you will also be able to decide what to keep in. Obviously you will not be able to keep all insects out of your garden despite the greenhouse. There will be some small insects that will sneak in through the cracks and cause some problems. By purchasing garden spiders from your local pet store, you can keep them inside your garden where they will eliminate all the harmful insects.
Doesn’t building a greenhouse seem like a much better idea now? Not to mention they can become a very decorative piece of your home. There are literally hundreds of greenhouse plans with different styles and looks on the market to choose from. There are also several kinds of plans from small to PVC piping to even wooden greenhouse plans. Before you go off and start working on your latest weekend project, I must advise you to follow clear, easy-to-read, greenhouse plans. You would not want to build off an amateur’s plans because it may not result in a stable structure. Don’t put your garden and hard work at risk and use only professional greenhouse plans.
