Knowing what tools will best help you with landscaping your property can be a challenge. Are you going to use "elbow grease" and manual tools or use power tools? Even when you do that, what type of power tool do you use? There are all sorts of options. Gas-powered or electric? If electric: battery powered or corded? Clearly, some may seek guidance on these issues.
For instance, let us take lawn mowing. First we need to determine how much lawn you need to mow. If you are 2/3 of an acre or under we can likely eliminate a riding lawn mower or tractor lawn mower. But if you are above that there are still many options. A multiple acre property with large expanses of lawns may select a zero-turn radius lawn mower. If more versatility is needed but speed isn't as much of a priority, perhaps you'd prefer a wide tractor lawn mower instead? Then you may add attachments such as thatchers, trailers and other goodies to the back of the tractor. Few zero-turn radius lawn mowers offer such options. But those zero-turn radius mowers can mow big acreages in a very timely manner.
Now, perhaps, instead you've got your typical suburban .25-.67 acre plot of land. Unfortunately, there are more, not less options available! Let's start with the push-reel mowers. These are not your grandfather's push-reel mowers. Today's push reel mowers are geared so they practically glide through your lawn on their own! While they aren't meant for larger pieces of property these mowers are wonderful on small plots, especially if you really don't have a lawn large enough to be dragging out and maintaining a conventional gas or electric mower. You can find these mowers for as low as $75 and they can approach $300 depending on the options and quality you are seeking. A great choice for the environmentalist with it's zero emissions, they also give a nice clean cut to your grass with their reel blades.
Standard "push" mowers are available in gas, electric and even battery powered models. If you like, a great many are available in "self-propelled" varieties as well. These mowers are make up the bulk of your options in the mower category and are ideal for most people in the .25 - 1.0 acre property range. You may want to bag your clippings, mulch them or just eject them out the side of the mower. Most models offer multiple options in this regard. There are many resources to use to help you decide which mower is right for you.
Similarly, there are a great many string trimmers to choose from. Stand-alone electric and battery powered trimmers can be excellent for small properties with only a bit of edging and trimming to do. Larger gas-powered trimmers may be more appropriate for larger properties. Some of these gas-powered string trimmers are also convertable, meaning there are attachements available to convert them into edgers, blowers, hedge trimmers and even saws! These attachments may be able to save you from having to purchase additional stand alone tools! As always, start by considering the size of your property and then consider the options you may want.
There are a great many other tools. Hedge trimmers, lawn edgers, chain saws, tillers, hand saws, rakes, shovels...this list goes on and on. But with each tool, once you decide it is something you need, first consider the size of your property (how much of your property requires the use of this tool) and then consider what you need the tools to accomplish. This will allow you to select an appropriately sized tool and then select options you may need for your particular piece of property. Take it in steps, search for reviews and ask questions! You'll find it easier than you think to find the right backyard landscape tools.
