Grow Backyard Garden In The Fall

Most gardeners I know do not take advantage of the fall season sometimes they don't need it or are overly concerned about an early frost. If you decide to plant a fall garden you will do a little extra planning and work. But with a good plan and a little research you can successfully grow backyard garden in the fall. This will be a wonderful addition of an excellent harvest of fresh fall vegetables. Part of the plan is to plant what you have room for and what you personally like and know that will grow and be more resistant to any unexpected cold weather.

Some of the vegetables that you already have experience with often grow well. Peppers and tomatoes grow very well, while cucumbers and summer squash fade at the end of summer. Plan to start your fall garden midsummer and it will be ready to harvest at first frost. Some of the more durable vegetables for your backyard garden can grow when the temperature get in the low 30s and 20s.

It is good to ask the people at the garden center about what time you can expect first frost or you can go on line, or ask your neighbors. Buying your seed packs you will notice that the type of season is labeled on the back and the growing season information and how long it takes for your plants to mature.

In spring you may not find seeds for the fall if you do you will need to keep them in a cool dry location until you are ready to plant. Soil preparation involves removing all the spring and summer plant and remove any weeds. Add some compost to add nutrients to the soil till the soil, water and wait about 24 hours and you are ready to begin your planting your backyard garden for the fall.

When you grow backyard garden you will need to be sure to plant the vegetables that have the shortest growing season get planted first that way you can harvest them first, long before the vegetables that can withstand the colder temperatures. As with any garden you will need to plan carefully the placement of your plants and to do the research.

It does helps to plant vegetables that need partial sunlight and less water to sustain them. You will need to be logical and avoid planting more than you need or can consume when planting a fall garden. It is always a good deed to share any extra vegetables from your backyard garden with families that can use and enjoy some of the harvest of your fall garden don’t forget times are tough these days.
