It’s April and it’s snowing! Isn't this springtime and we should be able to be out raking our lawns, sitting in our favorite deck chairs, maybe even sipping on a “cool one”? Now we have to pull out those winter boots that gleefully got chucked into the closet, grab our unwanted friend, the snow shovel, and go clean this mess up. Argh! I was so ready to start with my landscaping and gardening plans that I have been plotting all winter.
House bound again, what to do? We've come through Thanksgiving, come through Christmas and the New Year, and successfully bought our sweetie a Valentine’s gift. We've paid our dues, done our time…where is that elusive spring? Here’s what I’m going to do (after the cursing):
1. Read a book. Oops, already read everything over the last 4 months.
2. Write a book. The way winter is going I have plenty of time.
3. Renovate the house. Except that means driving and walking through the white stuff.
4. Surf the internet. Find all those hot spots I keep hearing about. As if the snow doesn't have me depressed enough already.
I just came up with the perfect idea! Wish the silly white stuff away. And I have the perfect chant to do that. This is something I wrote in grade 4, perhaps it will work:
Snow is falling on my hair
On the ground it seems to glare
In the snow I have some fun
I like to fall I like to run
I stay out for a long, long time
And while I’m out I make up rhymes
But my oh my here comes the sun
Now I can’t have no more fun
There’s no more snow so now its spring
Now the sun will again be king.
And I’m looking outside and…it didn't work...the snow is still there!
Why is it that we so look forward to spring? Is it that sense of renewal, of watching things comes back to life? Maybe it’s because we've been cooped up in the house all winter and we want fresh air and to actually believe the sun is hot.
While I think these things are true, I believe that we look forward to spring for the smell. Let me explain; there seems to be a freshness to the breeze that lets us know that things are growing, rejuvenating. While it may not have that heavy, summer taste to it, the spring breeze is definitely refreshing and invigorating. Try it, when the snow is gone. Stand outside and just breathe in those growing scents. Flowers, trees, even the growing grass…all are waking up and sending you succulent whiffs.
Well that didn't work either! I was trying to be deep and insightful but that did nothing to melt the snow. Oh well, someone please tell me spring is sprung…somewhere.
