The ins and outs of planning a manmade lake or pond
Ok, you have decided that you want to build a lake in your back yard, or you have decided that you want to built a pond in your back yard. You must be thinking, what is the difference? Well, yes, they are really the same thing, they are both hole in the ground, they both have water in them, they both can have fish n them, they both can run like a river if you so choose, they are both the same think, the only difference is that a pond is smaller than a lake, and most of the time a pond has a sort of water feature to it, so that it will have a sort of fake rock formation, a little water fall, a few different levels, but you will also get a pond that is just a hole filled with water, a small pond pump, a pond filter and a fish thrown into the mix. You could use all of the pond supplies for a lake to if you wanted, because you do not get as many lake supplies as you get pond supplies. Whatever you do though, whether you build a lake or a pond, if you have fish in any of them, you will need to water to be clean, you will need a pond filter, you will need a pond pump, or a lake pump, you will need to also get what is called a pong aerator to keep enough oxygen in the water if you pond or lake has no current or water feature like a water fall.
When you build a pond or a lake in your back yard for the sole purpose of keeping fish in it then you will have to remember that you will need to have the water oxygenated regularly. We all know that fish do not breath air like we do, but they do get oxygen from inside the water, that is when the water is running so that it does not get stale. So a pond filter, a pond pump and a pond aerator are essential thing if you plan on getting fish for your lake or pond, make sure though, that you get the right sizes of everything for the size of your pond or lake. Yes, you will have to get the sizes right, because you really cannot have a pump for an inside water feature running in an outside lake or pond, it will not do anything, and worse case is that it will break, because those pumps are not made to have sand and things too close to them. So you will have to do a lot of homework before you do this, also, remember that you will have to plan your lake or pond, you will have to plan your back yard, you will have to do this so that you do not have the moisture of your lake too close to your home foundation.
