How to Protect Your Home From Termite Infestation

Termites are silent destroyers since they can hide from humans for a long time, thriving in home structures without any immediate signs of damage. With that said, many homeowners have suffered from the huge costs of damages due to this kind of pest infestation. These pesky critters consume cellulose-based materials, such as wood and paper; thus, houses are very appealing for these bugs.

Subterranean and Drywood termites are two of the most common termite specie found in many households. Subterranean termites are usually yard soils where they form mounts and build tunnels to access their food sources above the ground. Drywood termites, on the other hand, usually thrive within wood. This specie typically infests walls and wooden pieces of furniture. If you are worried about termite infestation, there are ways to control these pesky creatures. You can control the condition with which these pests require to live.

Moisture Control

  • Repair any leaking faucets, pipes, and air conditioning units
  • Divert rainwater from the house foundation
  • Clean the gutters and downspouts
  • Remove any stagnant water in the garden, patio, or roof
  • Clean and open the vents
  • Seal any possible entry points around water and utility lines
  • Get rid of any wood mulch near your home or excessive plant cover in the yard

Eliminate Food Sources Of Termites

  • Keep away any lumber, paper, or firewood from the house foundation and any crawl spaces
  • Remove stumps and debris in the property
  • Install screen vents
  • Check for any signs of damages in wooden furniture, fences, and desks
  • Avoid wood and soil contact

Methods of Termite Control

There are some natural dusts which you can use around your property to control termites. Sprinkle them in places where termites might infest, such as crawl spaces, attic, basement, and outside the house where the wood meets with the soil.

Diatomaceous Earth: This is the safest method for termite control without the use of harmful and toxic chemicals. You can mix diatomaceous earth with boric acid and paint them on wooden pieces of furniture or structure.

Boric Acid: this can be painted on wooden furniture and structures. You can also dust it into the termite tunnels found in your yard. Remember though to avoid breathing in huge amounts of boric acid.

Pyrethrum: This can also be added to diatomaceous earth and be painted on wooden surfaces. This method can offer added protection.

Nematodes: You can also make use of termite eating nematodes. This method is very easy to apply- all you need is a hose and attachment unit. This termite control method is best used against subterranean termites than drywood.

These are just a few tips for controlling infestation. For a full blown pest problem, it is best to seek the services of a professional pest control provider.
