Organic Methods for Pest Control

Organic pest control

Planting the right kinds of vegetation or flowers can benefit the environment by keeping it pesticide free. Try using these natural methods to control pests and keep our environment a safer one rather than using harsh chemicals. This can be a added health benefit to you and your family if you are planting vegetables.

It is well known that mosquitoes won’t go near fields of garlic. Plant some garlic with your vegetables and you will benefit in a healthy way and have a natural pest control.

Marigolds are great to plant and insects hate them. Here’s a great flower with plenty of color that will keep the environment safer. Rabbits will eat them though. I once planted an entire garden of marigolds only to have the rabbits eat most of the flower heads off of them.

Onion plants are natural bug repellents. Besides helping keep the bugs away naturally, they are great to eat!

Ladybugs are one of the good bugs. They eat many bugs that harm our plants, like aphids, mealy bugs and spider mites. These bugs will destroy your plants and vegetables. You can buy ladybugs online but they must be released in the spring. There is no guarantee they will stay where you release them but you may keep enough to make it worth your while.

Praying mantis is the bug that will eat most bugs. These insects are worth keeping around. They are the only ones fast enough to catch mosquitoes. You can purchase praying mantis online. This insect only lives about 12 months, so you will need to replenish the supply of them every season. They can even kill and eat mice.

The herb wormwood is a huge help as an organic method. If you plant it you will get rid of slugs and snails. If you boil the leaves in water, you can use it as a natural spray for your plants so that you won’t need to spray your edible plants with chemicals.

Diatomaceous Earth is a very inexpensive way to decrease any kind of bugs including ants, spiders, fleas, roaches, silverfish, earwigs and many others. This organic pest control is made up of fossilize remains of microscopic shells and when the insect comes in contact with it, it acts like a knife and cuts them, then dehydrating them. This is an organic powder that has the consistency of flour. The great thing is it’s not harmful to child or pets, only insects. You can put it around your baseboards, behind your sink or anywhere you have seen bugs. This will prevent them from getting to your indoor plants. You can use this outside as well but once it gets wet, you will have to reapply. It’s a good idea to use it at the inside of doors, windows etc. The only caution which is on the label is breathing the powder in or getting it in your eyes which are common sense. This is a great alternative to the hazardous bug sprays that we use throughout the spring.
