Those of you that are familiar with me know that I am fond of researching flagpoles and flags. Those of you that are familiar with me know that I am fond of researching flagpoles and flags. Recently I started a new adventure studying African flags. Here is another one my entries on the current African flags that are attached to poles and displayed from other objects.

For each entry, the country or territory's name is given in its most easily recognized form and then in all its official languages. This is then followed by a short description of its political status and geographic position. The basic data for each flag contains the status of the flag, date of adoption, proportions and symbolic meaning.

Morocco is one of a good number of North African countries. Other North African countries include Libya, Tunisia and others. Morocco's flag features a red background with a green pentagram superimposed right on top. The color red has had substantial meaning in the country's history, and hence the use of the color for this national standard.

Algeria is located east of Morocco. Even though neighbors, Algeria flies a very different flag from Algerian flagpoles. The People's Republic of Algeria is the largest country in Africa. The country's standard is bi-color type standard, meaning that his flag features two vertical bands (green and white). It was adopted on 7/3/1962.

I have some good friends from the Republic of Ghana, which is located in Western Africa. This country was the very first to fly the so-called "Ethiopian" colors from African flag poles. These colors are in fact called today the "Pan-African" colors respectively. This horizontal tricolor shows the colors red, yellow and green. The yellow horizontal stripe displays a black star.

Different countries in Europe, including France and Belgium, mainly colonized North Africa. Countries in Asia also colonized parts of this incredible continent. Notably the Kingdom of Great Britain, but also France and Portugal. They claimed a great many parts of Africa. During the 20th century different African countries claimed or were granted independence. Guinea became independent first, following their dependence on France.

Egypt has been in the news for a number of months, if not more than one year, because of the different events as part of the country's ongoing revolution. The Egyptian flag has been flying around from African and such flag poles for a few decades. This flag is a tricolor type standard, and it's design uses the colors black, red and white. The top band is red, and the bottom one is white.
