Growing Begonias Indoors for fun
Begonia (Begonia semperflorens) is a popular indoor plant grown for its beautiful flowers and also for its colorful foliage. You don't need to be horticulturist to raise this plant, because this is very easy to grow.
As long as you know the needed requirements to grow them, you're sure to have the best indoor begonia in your home.
Before you start your indoor begonia, you've to determine what type you're going to plant. There are 3 types of this plant, to wit; tuberous, fibrous, and rhizomatous.
To be successful, select the fibrous or rhizomatous types, they're easy to grow as an indoor plants. The tuberous type needs your special care since it requires a higher humidity and sufficient light during its entire growing period.
Requirements for growing begonia
1.  Light requirement. Fluorescent bulb is an excellent lighting system for your indoor begonia. It gives you control as to the amount of light the plant needs. But for economy, you can use your windows especially if it catches sun light 5 – 7 hours a day.
2.  Containers. Use an earthen pots as your container. They're excellent for drainage of excess water, since begonia does not tolerates too much water. Other potting materials can be used as substitute, but make sure they have a good drainage capacity.
3.  Soil media. You should use a soil-less mixture for your begonia. Soil-less mixtures consists of peat moss mix with perlite or vermiculite. If you mix your own mixture, use this composition; 2 parts peat moss and one part perlite.
4.  Humidity. To maintain enough humidity in your begonia is to mist them daily. When using bulb as your lighting system, simply cover your plants with a non-flammable plastic cover.
5.  Water requirement. Begonia don't like too much water, but they always need to have a continuous water supply. See to it that the moisture requirement is meet to have your indoor begonia a success.
6.  Plant nutrition. You can mix your own weak fertilizer into a soluble form and apply to your begonia at least once a week.
