He went on explaining the various garden pergolas and the decoration they provide and how much he appreciates his accent piece. Then he told me that they were also quite handy for the songbirds in search of nesting areas.
Over time the pergolas really grew on me as I began to see the different styles and how people used them to accent their outdoor spaces. I started to really want one. Garden pergolas, wood pergolas, and vinyl pergolas seemed to be everywhere once I started to really look at what type I had in mind.
I settled on the unstained, natural pergolas as my favorite and found that I could get them for a reasonable price. I liked the way they looked after a few years of natural weathering and I liked the fresh wood smell. So it wasn't long before it was up and standing proud. We had placed it right off the back door and you had to walk up the steps to the back door right beside it. I was thrilled and delighted with my new piece.
My neighbor had certainly not been kidding. Pergolas are definitely a safe place for the songbirds to nest and before long I had my own. I could see that there were a few eggs in the nest when I would walk out the back door and down the steps. I felt a nice, peaceful connection to the natural world and really felt the idea of offering these little guys safe haven while improving the look of my yard was fabulous.
They week my niece and nephew came to visit the most amazing thing happened. I walked outside and realized that the eggs were cracking little by little. The kids watched from a safe distance as the little ones hatched and for the next 10 days they spent part of their trip going to check on the growth progress of the birds. The day before the kids left to go back home the birds took flight. Wooden pergolas are beautiful. So is the look of wonder in someone's eyes as they experience the safe haven place for a nesting experience.
