Maybe it's your soil
Most gardeners neglect the soil when growing flowers, ornamentals, vegetables, and other plants. They treat the symptoms of plant problems instead of the cause, which is most often a soil depleted of humus and microbes by over fertilization with synthetic fertilizers and misuse of synthetic pesticides. A healthy soil produces healthy plants, fruit, and vegetables that in return make us healthier. So, we really need to do all that we can to improve our soil.
A microscopic examination of a soil sample reveals a wide variety of animal and plant life, some beneficial and essential to human well-being, and some harmful, often causing problems for people, their livestock or plants. The animal life includes earthworms, gophers, insects, mice, millipedes, mites, moles, nematodes, slugs, snails, and spiders. Soil organisms include actinomycetes, algae, bacteria and fungi.
Soil organisms act both chemically and physically. They digest crop residues and other organic matter enzymatically, and can move the residues from one place to another, mixing it with the soil. Organisms decompose stems, leaves, and other crop residues.
Not all soil organisms are beneficial. Some of the most injurious plant pests are soil borne. For example, nematodes attack and destroy plants in a wide variety of species. Pathogenic soil-borne bacteria and fungi are also responsible for significant plant losses.
