Making the Best Use Out of your Limited Garden Space

If you are a gardener and spend a lot of time outdoors planning your vegetable or flower garden then you share that love of the smell of freshly turned earth with many people who have 'green thumbs'. Springtime is a much anticipated time for the average gardener as there are plots to plan and seeds and bulbs to purchase.

Perhaps you have both an garden in your yard and an greenhouse on your property. If you find that you are running out of room for your herbs, foliage, fruits or vegetables then maybe it is time to purchase one of the many types of vertical growing systems that are the market. This type of system allows you to stack pots in vertical towers that allows for very high density production in a far smaller amount of space. You can grow most anything vertically. Broccoli, lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries, greens, ivy, peppers, eggplants, basil corn or flowers thrive in this type of space saving growing system.

Gardening on vertical walls is commonly done by people who have limited garden space. A vegetable wall can easily be created by planting vegetables such as beans and peppers next to a wall and providing them with a trellis of some sort so that they can climb vertically. Not only will you save an incredible amount of space, but having vegetables grow upwards in this manner make it much easier to pick the beans or peppers once they are ripened.

Another space-saving idea for a garden of any size is to use live plants as edging. When we think of garden edging, brick, stone or metal edging usually comes to mind. But to the gardener with limited space, he or she will cleverly use herbs as garden edging to define areas of the garden.

If the idea of using herbs to edge your garden is appealing to you, then be sure to choose herbs that can withstand high traffic. Select herbs that are rather compact and that are easy to cut back if they should outgrow. The best choices for edging with herbs are thyme, parsley, sage and chives.

No matter how small of a garden area you have, you can make the most out of that space by utilizing some of the methods mentioned here. There is no reason not to grow plants vertically, use trellises whenever possible and make use of live and edible plants as a great way to bring definition to your garden.
