Hydroponics gardening is a way of growing plants indoors in the growing medium other than soil. One of the methods includes suspending the roots in the water solution with the dissolved hydroponic nutrients in it. Such technique offers the plants a possibility to receive all the necessary minerals and vitamins for the optimal growth. As a result, nutrients are used more effectively and the crops gained with such method are better and richer than those grown with other gardening techniques.
The majority of gardeners, who grow plants hydroponically indoors, prefer the Ebb and Flow system, which waters the plants with the help of the set timer and pump, triggered by the timer. When the system turns on the pump, it floods the growing tray with plants, regularly supplying them nutrients. This technology makes it possible to create the required conditions for the plants to grow best. It also allows using various types of media. However, it needs to be always plugged in and needs electricity to operate.
Hydroponics supplies (e.g. Gravel and Grow rocks at the bottom of the grow tray) aid in the providing nutrients to the plants roots. Small individual plants containers are beneficial, because they are easy to move if necessary.
The Water Culture method suggests growing the plants on a Styrofoam platform that floats on the water with the dissolved hydroponic nutrients. This water solution is constantly aerated with the pump, so that plants receive the necessary amount of oxygen. Plants that need much moisture to thrive (for example, leaf lettuce) are the best candidates to be grown using this raised gardening system. Other benefit of this method is the possibility to teach children the basics of growing plants, if it is arranged in the classroom.
The wick method is said to be the easiest hydroponics system. It constantly provides plants with a steady supply of nutrient-rich water with the help of a wick, which one end is sunk into the solution, while the other one is in the growing medium. This method does not require sophisticated and expensive equipment. On the other hand, it is not suitable for the large plants, as they may need more significant amounts of water in the shorter period of time than the wicks can supply.
To sum it up, gardeners can nowadays choose from multiple hydroponics gardening systems. Each of them has its advantages and benefits; thus, it is up for a grower to decide what suits him best, which one seems to be the most convenient, and which may provide the richest crops of the particular plants a gardener plans to grow. Be sure that with this variety of systems and methods of growing indoors everyone – a beginner and an experienced gardener – will enjoy hydroponics gardening all year-round.
