The Honeysuckle plant can enrich a garden as a climbing plant or colorful stand-alone shrub. The shrubbier type honeysuckle is one of the best winter-flowering shrubs. Many reach a height 15 feet -- making it an impressive and eye-catching plant.

The climbing variety of honeysuckle reaches a height of 20 to 30 feet tall. They grow best when provided with a fence, trellis or wall they can twine around. The plant can tolerate many different conditions. However, it is full sun where the plant does best.

The honeysuckle vine is often grown as an ornamental bush to minimize soil erosion. Its stems and vines wrap around everything in its path. There are more than 200 varieties of the plant. Many begin blooming in spring and continue to midsummer.

Insects are attracted to the honeysuckle plant because of sweet nectar. Growing the honeysuckle will provide a food source for butterflies, bees, and the always-popular humming bird. If you own a cat you should use caution, it has been reported the plant is toxic to cats.

The honeysuckle vine gets it name from the pungent nectar inside the center of the bloom. The plant is readily available in garden stores at the start of spring.
