There are a number of individual theories which exist regarding the use of an artificial turf on sports field. Although many qualified contractors are available when considering the natural grass option or the synthetic turf option.
While it is believed that number of injuries is less on natural grass as opposed to synthetic turf. But, according to national studies on athletic injuries, there is no significant difference in the number of major injuries while participating on grass or artificial turf fields. In fact, a study also concluded that there were slightly fewer serious injuries on artificial turf. But, the number of minor injuries was more on synthetic fields as compared to natural grass.
It is important to consider the amount and type of usage the field or facility is proposed to have when comparing artificial versus natural turf. Synthetic turf fields being extremely durable, provide a stadium with a surface that can be used with unlimited frequency for various sports. Even with frequent usage and inclement weather conditions, synthetic field remains consistent for major events.
On the other hand, to maintain natural grass surfaces in good condition, it is recommended to not hold more than 10-15 football games per year. Or, one other sporting function per week. A game played on a natural grass surface in inclement weather or rainy weather can damage the turf for an extensive period. This may further require additional expense to speed up the restoration process.
The initial capital cost for installing an artificial turf could be relatively higher because of excavation of existing site, installing new drainage and irrigation systems, installing sand fill and growing grass. But all these are one time cost and should be considered as an investment for a long term.
Once installed accurately, the synthetic turf fields are low maintenance turfs and prove to be a worthwhile investment.
