Hedges do wonderful things for a home. Flowers and vegetable plants are cared for but a lot of homeowners assume that their hedges require little to no care. There are a few things that homeowners need to be aware of however if they are going to keep hedges for gardens. There are a few important steps for care that need to be taken to make sure that these hedges are going to strive.
The best place to get started is ensuring the planting of the hedges is correct. When planting hedges, remember that they need just as much sunlight as other plants. This means choosing an ideal location where they are going to look nice but also where they are going to get the sun that they need to strive and be healthy. They also need to be watered on a regular basis just like other plants.
While the hedges for gardens are young it is important to try and keep them compact. They should not be allowed to grow upward impeded because this is only going to result in having branches grow further apart and gaps may appear in between the hedges. This is very unsightly and instead the goal should be to keep the hedges for garden neat and compacted together so that they appear to be just one straight line of hedges with no spaces in between. Hedges should always be kept cut so that there are no branches that are protruding and causing gaps. Trimming is of course one of the most important steps involved in taking care of hedges.
There are all sorts of different methods that people use to keep their hedges nicely trimmed. The best starting point is to walk around the hedges and start at the top, taking off any stray branches or pieces of hedge that may have overgrown where they should be. The same goes for each side around the hedges and using string is often helpful as a guide to ensure that there are no mistakes made with cutting. At least if they are trimmed in late winter or early spring, if any part of the hedge is accidentally cut it will grow back.
Never use a pair of cheap shearers on hedges because not only is it going to give them a bad appearance but it is also bad for the leaves on the hedges and can make them grow in rough and jagged. Small hand cutters are great for getting in between tight spaces and for getting detail but they will take forever to use if you plan to use them all the way. These are just a few of the many different tips on taking care of hedges and how to ensure that they last. As long as the hedges are properly maintained they will look lovely and will last through the years.
