Organic Herb Gardening: Tips in Growing Herbs at Home

For many generations, herbs have been known for their therapeutic effects as well as their ability to make cooking more palatable. Unfortunately, in the wake of the recent food shortage and price increases, herbs have become quite scarce and expensive. Due to scarcity of supply, even if you do have the money to buy herbs for cooking or medicinal purposes, you can no longer just go to the market and buy all the herbs that you want. Fortunately, there are ways to ensure that you get all the herbs that you need. One of the best ways to make sure that you get your supply of herbs anytime you want is to do some organic herb gardening at home.

Planting herbs at home is not difficult. Even if you live in the 10th floor of an apartment building, you can still do some organic herb gardening inside your apartment. All you are containers, planting materials, some garden soils, compost and water.

Getting Started

You need ample space if you want to engage in indoor organic herb gardening. No, you do not need an entire room for your organic herb garden. A small space like an old closet is enough to start a small indoor herb garden. Just make sure that this place gets enough sunlight everyday. Always remember that plants need sunlight in order to thrive. If you happen to live in those windowless cells, you need to use artificial lights for your plants. Don't worry; you do not have to keep the lights on 24 hours a day so your energy consumption will not really increase drastically.

Another thing that you need to do if you want to do some organic herb gardening at home is to find some planting materials. Find some seeds of your favorite herbs. The good thing about using seeds as planting materials is that seeds are cheaper, easy to find and easy to store in case you decide not to plant them immediately. Most garden supplies stores sell seeds of different types of herbs for a few dollars a pack.

After finding your planting materials, look for pots and containers for your plants. You may use decorative pots and containers for your indoor herb garden. Decorative pots and containers will make your indoor herb garden look more beautiful. Aside from buying pots and containers, you need to invest in a good, heavy duty rack for stacking your pots and container. Sound organic herb gardening practices suggest that you should plant a variety of herbs. To maximize whatever space you have, stack your pots and containers on racks.
