Kids Gardening Projects

Gardening is healthy way of relieving stress and getting in touch with nature. Many schools and parents encourage kids gardening in order for them to be more grounded and aware of the natural side of things. Encouraging kids to garden is a great way of giving them responsibility and chores. Kids gardening can improve their values and principles as well as encourage them to value nature and our environment.

Easy Projects For Kids

Giving children their very own garden pot to plant on and take care of can be very exciting for them. Kids gardening projects must be monitored by adults just to be sure that they do the right things and do not encounter any safety hazards. One easy kids gardening project is to cultivate a small garden plot. You can encourage the child to choose his or her very own seeds to plant and also give the responsibility of watering the plot daily to the child.

Other easy kids gardening projects are terrariums and miniature hydroponic gardens. Terrariums are small tanks that are basically closed and the plants in the tank generate their own moisture and carbon dioxide. It is similar to an enclosed sub-environment that you can place in the child's room. Hydroponic gardens are gardens that do not use soil to grow plants, instead the plants are suspended over water and their roots are encouraged to grow towards the water.

Hydroponics can be done by using a small glass container filled halfway with water where a potato is suspended with the use of toothpicks or a skewer. Eventually, the potato will grow roots and the roots will seek the water below. This kind of kids gardening project also teaches them a lot about science and botany.

If you have limited space in your home for a large scale kids gardening project, you can use pots to plant the seeds in. The responsibilities of taking care of the plants in the pots are virtually the same as the plants in the gardening plot.

Be ready to remind the child to water the plants daily as well as to till the soil regularly to encourage root growth. It is fun to see kids gardening and taking an active interest in nature. Encourage your child more by getting him a set of kids gardening tools if the child is relatively small or a bigger set if the child is older. Other ways to encourage kids gardening is to accompany them. Not only can you monitor your child but you can also spend the time bonding with him.
