Eliminate Woodchucks - 3 Surefire Ways To Get Rid of Woodchucks

While a woodchuck may seem like a harmless animal, its burrowing habits often spell danger for humans. The way it burrows and feeds itself can cause extensive damage to farms, orchids, buildings, as well as widespread destruction to crops such as alfalfa, soybeans, beans, squash, and peas. Over the years, several techniques have been used by people to eliminate woodchucks. Some of them have worked and others have failed. In this article, I will tell you of three easy ways to eliminate woodchucks.

1. Fencing: Fencing is one of the easiest ways of eliminating woodchucks. However, your fences need to be very high, certainly no less than 3 feet long. Woodchucks are good climbers and if the height of your fences is too short, they can easily scale it down. The fences should be made of heavy poultry wire or 2-inch (5-cm) mesh woven wire. Also, you need to prevent them from burrowing under the fence. To do this, make sure that you have buried the lower edge of your fences to at least 10 to 12 inches under the ground.

2. Frighten them: If you don't want to fence off your entire cultivation area but still want to eliminate woodchucks, you can frighten them by using devices such as scarecrows and human effigies. These frightening devices will give you temporary relief from woodchucks.

3. Gas cartridge: One of the best (although expensive) ways to tackle with woodchucks is to use gas cartridges. Gas cartridges are available in the form of small cylinders that contain various forms of combustible gases. You just ignite the cylinder then place it in the burrow that the woodchuck has made. Once the cylinder burns, it releases a gas called carbon monoxide, which is lethal for woodchucks. You can buy as many cylinders as you want from your local farm supply stores, as there is no general restriction on the sell or use of this pesticide. The gas cartridges come with labels that contain directions on how to use them. You should read those instructions before using them.

Make sure you don't place gas cartridges in burrows made under wooden structures, near buildings, or other combustible materials, because of the potential fire hazard. You can easily light a cylinder by igniting the fuse. If you know how to properly use them, they should not explode. Make sure you don't inhale the smoke yourself as that can cause serious health hazards.
