Does your yard look like a war zone? You look out over the lush green grass and everywhere you look you see little ridges and mounds. Oh no, what have those children been up to this point? It was not the youngsters, you have ground moles. Ground moles! What are ground moles?
Ground moles are a little blind burrowing animal belonging to the Talpidae family. They have round bodies, delicate snouts and dig like they're swimming the breast stroke through the Earth. There are several different types of ground mole. These small animals can be from 1-9 inches long, are brown or gray in colour and burrow everywhere for food. These busy tiny creatures do not sleep and so are busy all year long making a mess of your lawn.
Although ground moles make a massive mess out of grassed areas, gardens and crops they are really handy little creatures in that they also aerate the soil, clear pests and fertilize as they are going. They don't eat any plants, bulbs or roots so damages are restricted to the runs and unpleasant burrows they create in their unending search for food. ?The difficulty is that the preferred food of the ground mole is close to the surface, so as they tunnel and burrow in search of a meal or to build escape routes from danger they bug the ground resulting in furrows in your grass. So now you know what they are, how does one get shot of moles?
Mole Control
Moles are notoriously troublesome to get rid of. There are actually only 2 ways to do it and neither way is simple. Well simple in principle although not so simple in practice. The first way is by poison bait. To use poison bait you first have to identify which tunnels are constantly used and then plant the bait. Moles have tunnels that are used frequently as well as some that might be used once or twice and deserted. This method has its arguments. Poisoned moles can be accidentally eaten by house cats and other animal life, so finding and junking the carcasses could be vital.
The alternative way is by traps. To catch them you need to also identify the used tunnels and place the trap appropriately. Moles aren't considered threatening but may bite, so use heavy gloves if you want to handle a live mole as they have needle sharpened teeth. Once besieged the animal must be released far away so it can not make its way into your yard. Throwing it over the fence into the evil guy next doors grass will not work. He could have a mole problem but the mole will simply say thanks for the additional food and make his way back into your yard.
Both techniques of removing ground moles can be difficult and inhibited by breeding; a female mole throws a litter of up to 8 young 2 times ever year in the spring. You want to get them all to be successful.
Ground moles are bountiful as well as common in the United Kingdom. These tiny animals can make a huge mess out of a garden in little time and can be difficult to address. It may be better to leave the removal to a professional.
