With growers producing as many as 100 million pounds each year, it is no surprise that Ohio apples are a large commodity. From the months of September through November, Ohio apple farmers produce approximately 40 varieties.
Of the 40 or so different types, some remain more popular. One example, the Fuji, is well known for being sweet. Because of its sweetness, it works well in a wide variety of baked goods. It is also a very nice apple to eat raw if you want a refreshing, crisp snack.
Originally from New Zealand, the Gala is part of the golden delicious family. These small, firmly textured apples are known for their sweetness. In 2006 they were voted the number two most popular variety according to the United States Apple Association. This fruit features a firm texture that makes them the ideal choice when eaten as a snack or in baked goods.
Discovered during the 19th century by a grandmother named Maria Smith the Granny Smith originated in Australia. This hard, tart apple is the perfect texture for pies and baked goods. This green apple was discovered purely by accident. This fruit is also ideal in salads or other dishes due to the fact that once cut they do not turn brown as quickly as other types.
Another variety, the Jonagold, was developed in 1953. This version, a cross between the Jonathon and the Golden Delicious was first found in New York State. With its thin skin and sweet insides, it is popular as both a snack and in pies. Since it does not store well it is a must that they are used as soon as they are harvested. Since they will spoil quickly if stored in a cold area, this fruit is limited in its supply.
Another offspring of the Golden Delicious, the Crispin, is another popular variety that was first discovered in Japan. Originally introduced in 1948, the Crispin was first named Mutsu after the province, Mutsu in Japan, where this fruit first originated. This uniquely spicy flavored apple features a firm texture that makes it ideal to bake with.
Contrary to popular belief, the Golden Delicious is not related to the Red Delicious at all. This sweet, yellow skinned fruit is prone to bruising easily and must be handled carefully. These can be enjoyed either as a less mature fruit while they are a light green color and slightly tart or can be eaten as a mature fruit. As a mature fruit they will have a skin that is a clear yellow and will be sweet. They may also show a slight pink color across the top. While these are enjoyed raw, they are also a favorite for salads and for making apple butter and sauces.
Ohio apples were made popular in the early part of the 19th century by a legend named Johnny Appleseed. As the legend goes, Johnny spread seeds throughout the Ohio Valley as a random act of kindness. During September there are annual festivals to honor Johnny Appleseed. These are held both in Ohio and in Fort Wayne, Indiana where his grave can be found.
