1. Overwatering. Don’t water your plants too much. They like well drained soil, and don’t like wet feet. If they’re wilting and the soil is dry, water them. But, if the soil is wet, don’t water them again.
2. Don’t over-fertilize your plants. More is not better when it comes to fertilizer. Too much fertilizer will burn plants. It can also turn the soil toxic.
3. Starting with unknown seeds. This isn’t the worst thing in the world to do, but beware. Plant genetics dictate results much more than anything else. With unknown seeds you don’t know what you’ll get. Even if the quality of the herb the seeds came from was good, you don’t know if it’s tall, small, bushy, outdoor or indoor, auto-flowering or not. If you can take the risk, go ahead, but if you want more certain results buy good seeds.
4. Be careful in germination. use pure water that has had the bleach evaporated out of it. Once the seeds germinate don’t handle them too much. Try using flat ended tweezers. The germinated seeds are tough but you can damage the tap root or introduce pathogens that can kill them.
5. Keep the project secret. Flies can’t get into a closed mouth. The fewer people who know about your grow the less chance you’ll get into trouble. Law enforcement or crop thieves are a real threat.
6. Don’t contaminate your garden with other people’s clones or plants. A pest free environment is the best environment. If you get pests they can be tough to eradicate completely. Other plants are a common source of pests, so avoid unknown ones. Practice safe sex!
7. Don’t over cultivate. If it is your first grow remember to sit back and let Mother Nature do her thing. A yellow leaf here or there is not the end of the world. Don’t check your plants every few minutes just to make sure everything is ok.
8. Stick to the basics your first time out. You don’t need to spend a bunch of money on gadgets and hormones. Lights, water, warmth and nutrients are what’s needed. You can experiment with stuff later, once you’ve seen the process through once and know what’s what.
9. Follow directions. Whenever you’re using fertilizer or pesticides, read the directions carefully. The same applies when checking and adjusting PH.
10. Probably the biggest tip is to create a good environment for plant growth. Weed wants to grow, and it isn’t hard to grow. Keep PH between 6.5 and 7. Keep the plants warm. Water them, but keep them drained. For baby plants, seedlings and clones you have to keep high humidity.
So long as you follow these simple ten steps you should get a great crop. I was blown away by my first success. Don’t worry about being the absolute best your first time. Just learn the ropes and get a harvest. You can refine your cultivation procedure as time goes by.
