If you enjoy completing Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects at home, you will probably be thrilled to find out that at-home projects are now even easier with many manufacturers providing simple plans to build sheds along with easy-to-assemble and lightweight parts. This means that building a shed — make that: building a quality, sturdy and great looking shed can be as easy as 1-2-3. For those that have a lot of knowledge and experience in build projects, you can add on to the basic model to create a more sophisticated shed without a lot of effort. Here are some tips that will help you build an awesome shed:

Tip #1 – Make sure you get the measurements right from the very beginning. Measure the area that you want to build the shed in your garden or backyard area before you do anything else. This will help you to ensure that the new shed will be at least 4 feet away from your fence, the side of the house or any other structure to reduce the chance of fire hazards. Measure the dimensions of the shed itself as well as the overhead space of the shed so you can see how tall it will be. This will be helpful so you can be sure that there will be no overhanging structures such as the awning, roof or balcony and that there are no low hanging branches from nearby trees.

Tip #2: Use the Internet to check out different shed plans and materials for DIY projects. A lot of companies sell ready-made frames as well as roofing structures and even suggestions on how to create the best type of flooring for your new shed. Make sure that you select a model that fill fit well into the area that you want to build your shed.

Next you need to think about what type of shed you want and what you will be using it for. This will largely depend upon whether you will be storing household goods in the shed, if you will need to add electrical outlets or lighting, or if you just want to use it as a place to store your gardening tools and other outdoor landscaping or work materials.

Tip #3 – Make sure you get all of the materials that you will need that are not provided in the DIY project kit. Even if it says that all materials are included, you will still need a hammer, a small saw, some extra nails, adhesives and other tools. Safety gear is an excellent investment as you will use it on other projects in the future. Tools such as gloves, a good work light and goggles will be very beneficial.

Tip #4 – Start your project by putting the flooring in first when building a shed. Obviously, the timing of flooring installation will depend greatly on the type of floor you want to use. If you put the flooring in first you are building “from the ground up”, which will make your shed more durable and longer-lasting.

Tip #5 – Make sure to follow all of the instructions in the DIY kit to the letter. Don’t skip steps or jump ahead in the step-by-step guide, be sure to do everything that the instructions say you should do. Do not substitute materials that you don’t have on hand with something else and do not make shortcuts. All this will do is end up making the job take longer and will lessen the durability and usefulness of the finished product.
