Though fiberglass swimming pools have become very popular today and a lot of people are considering them over other more conventional pool options, the truth is that they aren't perfect. There are several ways in which they are flawed. Before investing in fiberglass swimming pools, you should know these limitations so that you know you get a good deal.
1. The biggest problem, perhaps, is the fact that you cannot drain the water from these pools easily. If you want to do this, you have to remove all water with a pump and then replace it using a hose or something similar. This is a lot of effort. But, in any case, the manufacturers of fiberglass swimming pools do not advise removing the water at all; otherwise, there is a chance that the fiberglass might buckle due to the sudden removal of pressure. When the water from it is removed, then the groundwater from the surrounding area tries to enter into the fiberglass structure. This sudden influx of water could crack the fiberglass.
2. You should also keep in mind that fiberglass swimming pools are prefabricated. They are made in factories and then brought to your home and installed. There are many difficulties involved here. First, since they are prefabricated, you really don't have your say over the design, structure and even size of the pool. Second, they will need to be transported to your place. This will at least require a proper passage for the truck. Nothing should obstruct the large pool on the truck between the place where it ships from to the place where you want to install it.
3. Also, since they are prefabricated, you have a few standard sizes to choose from. This restricts your options.
4. You don't need to maintain your fiberglass swimming pools much, but you will definitely need to spend on reorienting them after every few years. Unlike concrete, they don't adhere to the swimming pool. They are prone to slipping and need to be readjusted accordingly. However, once installed, you don't have to think about another readjustment for several years. That could be a hassle, though, especially because you will need to call a professional to do it.
5. Fiberglass swimming pools are also limited in their options in that you cannot perform all the sporting things you want to do in them. It is not advisable to dive into these pools, for instance. Some people, who are avid swimmers, may feel restricted in these pools.
6. Apart from that, there are people who feel that pools made of fiberglass aren't the 'real' thing. These pools don't conform to the traditional notion of swimming pools, and people who think like that will never be able to be happy in their fiberglass models.
So, keep all these things in mind if you are considering fiberglass swimming pools. These pools aren't bad--in fact, they can be quite the rage today. But you need to be practical about making your decisions about them. Look into their drawbacks, and then make an intelligent decision based on what you want.
