The orchid Dendrobium is one of the most common types of orchids and a favorite among households. Their flowers are cut and used for various purposes such as corsage or bouquet. Most of the beginner orchid growers select Dendrobiums or Phalaepnosis since these types are resilient and comparatively easier to grow. Dendrobiums are sturdy plants which can endure and produce beautiful flowers.
The orchid Dendrobium is the second largest group of the orchid family and has about 1,200 species today. This orchid genus can be found in diverse habitats in many regions in Asia, Australia, New Guinea and New Zealand. Generally, most of Dendrobium species are epiphytic (which means that they grow anchored to trees and shrubs in tropical and subtropical places) while some are lithophytic (which means that they grow on rocks or very rocky soil). This type of orchids thrive especially in summer seasons.
Like all other orchid types, Dendrobiums need to grow in an environment which is similar to their natural growing conditions in the wild forests. If you want to provide the best care for this orchid, you must meet its requirements especially proper amounts of light, water, humidity and temperature.
Potting Media - Dendrobiums like it best when placed in small orchid pots where their delicate roots are confined and secured. Select a pot which has a hole at the bottom or some holes at the sidewall to provide enough air circulation for your plant and proper drainage as well. There are various types of pots such as plastic pots, baskets and clay pots. If you specifically want to grow your orchid outdoors, you may choose clay pots since these are heavier and not easily blown over by winds. However, if you prefer to grow your orchid indoors, you may use a plastic pot which has transparent walls that enable you to see the proper growth of roots.
Light - Dendrobiums love strong natural sunlight so it would be good to find a spot where it can receive bright sunlight. However, too much is not good so avoid exposing it to strong sunshine in afternoons to avoid burning. Morning sun is best for your plant. You can place the plant by a window facing the eastern side. If there isn't enough light at your place, place your orchid under four 40-watt fluorescent light bulbs for alternative artificial light.
Temperature - The ideal daytime temperature for your orchid is about 75-85 degrees Fahrenheit while at nighttime, the recommended temperature should be between 60-65 degrees Fahrenheit.
Water and Humidity - Ensure that proper watering is provided for your plant. Water your Dendrobium orchid about once a week during its growth period. It can be a little moist and humid during its growth period. However, ensure that it is dried out between watering periods when it has bloomed already. Avoid over watering your orchid as it could harm your plant's health. You may maintain about 50-60% humidity levels. Additionally, you can use humidity trays to provide enough moisture.
Fertilizer - During the growth period, it would be best to apply regulated amounts of fertilizer so that your Dendrobium orchid can bloom healthily and vibrantly. Ask from the orchid or supply shop about the correct amounts of fertilizer to apply for your plant.
These tips can surely help you provide the best care for your Dendrobium orchid.
