Helpful Information

A few tips: Whether seeding an entire lawn or a few bare spots, test the soil first. It should be neutral or slightly acidic, with a pH of 6 to 7. To ensure that the seeds will grow, add lime, organic matter (see the calculator for Top Dressing), and a 10-10-10 fertilizer. Till the soil 6 inches deep, so it is pebbly, not powdery. Over a large area, spread seeds with a mechanical spreader: spread half the seeds walking in one direction, and the other half walking perpendicular to the first seeding. Bags of grass seed always provide a recommended application rate.

In addition, many lawn experts recommend seeding with a blend. Consult with your supplier to choose the type of seed most likely to succeed in your area. Avoid cheap seed, which may be old or adulterated.
