Growing Iresine (Bloodleaf or Beefsteak Plant)

Pronunciation: eer-eh-see'-nee

A bold, upright plant similar in appearance to Coleus, Iresine makes a statement in the garden with its striking foliage. Echo the color of the leaves with other burgundy or chartreuse plants, or contrast with white-flowered annuals. Iresine earns its keep as a centerpiece in a container or as a mid-border bedding plant.

Light/Watering: Grow in part sun or shade and water when the top 1in of soil is dry to the touch.

Soil and pH: Use a well-drained potting mix or plant in soil with a pH of 5.6-5.9.

Pest/Diseases: Infrequently bothered by mealy bug or scale. No disease concerns.

Companions: Combine with other tropicals such as Bananas or Cordyline. Contrast with the flowers of Verbena, Calibrachoa, or Petunia.

Late Spring: Pinch to promote side branching and fullness.
