Mints grow well in full sun and average to rich, well-drained soil. For container-grown plants, water when the top 1in of soil is dry. Plants can spread vigorously by underground stems, so choose a location where that won't be a concern, or restrict them by growing in a container or a confined area. Cut down stems in fall. Peppermint (Mentha x piperita) and Spearmint (Mentha spicata) are hardy in Zones 3-7.
