Growing Phlomis (Jerusalem Sage)

Pronunciation: flow'-miss

Tiers of hooded flower pom-poms (actually, whorls) encircling the upright stems add a different dimension to the perennial garden. Jerusalem Sage is also prized for its fuzzy, textured foliage and for winter interest when the stems are left uncut. Easily grown, it's an asset in the border or meadow garden, and is sure to cause comment when brought into the house as a cut flower. Attractive to bees, butterflies and birds, and deer avoid it.

Light/Watering: Full sun. Water thoroughly after planting and give the plant a weekly soaking until it is established. Phlomis does not like wet feet, so don't over water.

Fertilizer/Soil and pH: Average, well drained soil; lean, sandy soil is ideal. Do not fertilize.

Continuing Care: Easily grown. Divide in early spring.
