If you love red roses, you'll want to try 'The CASA Rose', just out this month. A free-branching grandiflora, it pumps out clusters of bright scarlet-red blooms, each about 4 inches across, above dark green leaves. Grown at McCaffrey Roses in Wasco, California, 'The CASA Rose' bears its blooms atop long stems; the plant reaches 4 feet tall. Plant one and you'll be helping a good cause: A portion of the proceeds goes to CASA (National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association), which helps abused and neglected children thrive in permanent homes.
Bare-root plants of 'The CASA Rose' are available from Edmunds' Roses ($28, including handling and shipping). To order, visit www.edmundsroses.com/casarose or call 888/481-7673 and ask for item #SM1132. To plant, follow the directions in "Carefree Roses."
