Reaching 25 feet tall and 20 feet wide, Washington thorn has a graceful, open structure. The glossy leaves are 2 to 3 inches long, with three to five sharp-pointed lobes; foliage turns orange and red in autumn. Masses of white spring flowers are followed by clusters of small red fruits that attract birds. Needlelike thorns are sharp; to avoid snagging and scratching passersby, don't plant the tree too close to walkways.
