Warm summer days can cause plants to be stressed because they can’t absorb enough water to support healthy growth. This is especially true for those that are newly planted and don’t have extensive root systems. Cooler air temperatures during fall months make it easier to newly planted shrubs and perennials to retain the water they need.
During the fall the ground takes longer to cool down than the air. Compare the soil in September to April or May when frost (or snow!) is still a possibility. Warm soil temperatures in the fall promote root growth, which helps plants become established in their new home sooner.
If a plant has been established during the fall it will be ready to start growing during the next growing season. Don’t wait too long to plant in the fall though. Planting too late in the season may subject your new plants to chilling frosts (and snow?!).
