Our third season at the Rhode Island Street Community Garden has been a tremendous success. Students from Mr. Hann’s second grade class have worked hard over the last two years to create a productive vegetable and flower garden. These students will be moving on to the third grade this September and will be missed, but a new class will eagerly fill their shoes and have their chance to learn about starting seeds, planting, weeding, and of course enjoying the harvest. This year we have already harvested strawberries, tomatoes, lettuce, green beans, kale, and chard. We also have carrots and corn growing as well as a variety of herbs.
We have some new perennial beds in the garden this year thanks to Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo. We have some new signage indicating that we are a Grassroots Garden and our chalkboard signs help to welcome visitors. Later this month a wood chip path will be made to help decrease the amount of weeds that grow. Thanks to our neighbors who have been helpful with filling our need for water when mother nature doesn’t keep our rain barrel full.
