Gerbera daisies are among the most sought-after flowers, which are mainly used for decorative purposes. These disc-shaped flowers in vibrant colors are produced by ornamental plants that belong to the sunflower family,
Asteraceae. There are around 30 wild species of gerbera, and the domesticated cultivars are often found to be a cross between
Gerbera jamesonii and
Gerbera viridifolia. Today we have numerous cultivars of gerbera daisies that vary in size, shape, colors, and color combinations.
Though the type of petals and their arrangement are factors that help to distinguish between the different types of gerberas, it is the color of the flower that matters for many. Being the most popular cut flowers, gerberas are available in different colors. The basic gerbera daisy colors are white, yellow, orange, pink, and red. However, with the increasing number of cultivars, gerberas are now available in a wide range of colors, like lilac, purple, brown, salmon, burgundy, etc. You may also come across bicolor or multicolored flowers. Usually, gerberas do not come in blue or green. As far as gerbera colors are concerned, both petal color and the color of the central discs are applicable. In case of central discs, the basic color can be green or blackish brown. In case of petals, there can be different versions of the basic colors and each basic color may have an average of at least five different color combinations. Even mini gerbera daisies come in a wide array of colors to choose from.

Gerbera Types
Gerberas can be classified on the basis of various factors like the size, color of petals, disc color, number of petal rows, types of petals, and types of florets. As far as the number of petal rows are concerned, they can be divided into single, semi-double, and double blooms. While single blooms have a row of broad petals, semi-double ones have a complete row of broad petals along with an incomplete row. In case of double blooms, two complete rows of narrow petals can be found. Spider gerberas have double blooms with narrow petals. The type of florets also vary with different types of gerberas. The semi-double and double ones may possess an inner row of ray florets. The inner row or rows can also vary in number and size. In some gerbera daisies, like the crested and full crested ones, you may find three rows, that consist of an inner row with few ray florets, a middle row with small ray florets and an outer one with florets, which are almost half the size of the petals. Even the size of the flower may range between 7 to 12 centimeters. Miniature gerberas are small, but are widely used in smaller flower arrangements.
In short, gerberas come in a very wide range of colors and color combinations. Most of the gerbera suppliers maintain a color chart, which can be used by the customers, while placing an order.
