Northern sea oats (Chasmanthium latifolium), bottlebrush grass (Hystrix patula), variegated hakone grass (Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola', and ribbon grass (Phalaris arundinacea) are well-adapted to shade. Blue fescue (Festuca glauca) and most types of Miscanthus will grow well as long as they get several hours of direct sunlight daily. If you stretch the definition of grasses to grasslike plants, your options expand tremendously. Most of the sedges (Carex) grow well in shade. Lilyturf (Liriope), mondo grass (Ophiopogon), and hairy wood rush (Luzula acuminata) are additional grass look-alikes for shade.
