Eranthis, meaning "flower of spring," is true to its name by being one of the earliest risers each spring. Commonly called winter aconite, this tiny plant produces sunny yellow cup-shaped blooms that open to expose a crown of golden stamens. Blooming 1 to 2 weeks in the late winter to early spring, this little charmer willingly self-sows.

Location: Full sun When to plant: Late summer or early fall General Instructions: Eranthis requires no care once planted. Plant as soon as bulbs are available because they tend to dry out quickly, which inhibits or even prevents bloom. To help things along, soak the bulbs in warm water for 24 hours; then plant 3 inches deep and 3 to 4 inches apart. Plant underneath deciduous shrubs or anywhere the sun's rays can coax the blossoms to pop open. Once blooms are finished in the spring, allow the foliage to die back naturally.
