Azalea

Delicate azaleas (Rhododendron) are plants that adorn especially semi-shaded and cool spaces. Azalea is native to regions with mild winters and moderate summers in China, Japan, India, USA and Europe.

Simsii Rhododendron (Azalea indica) is one of the finest representatives of the species. Plants in culture are formed either as rich branched shrub or tree with the trunk 15-20 cm. Leaves are persistent and small. Red flowers have a diameter of 4-5 cm and 5-6 are grouped in bouquets. Red is the most requested (at a rate of 50-60%) followed by pink (30%). The plant is so attractive in flower size and composition can be simple or beaten, and through vivid colors, tones and shades of dark red or purple to pink and white. The edge spots can be straight, wavy or fringed. Flowering occurs in cool seasons of the year: fall, winter and spring.

Optimal growth temperature is 22-25 degrees during the day and 16-18 degrees at night. If you give it cold water, there will appear yellow spots on the leaves and the growth will be slowed. Vegetative growth is favored by long days. Azaleas should be placed in an environment with shadow and during summer you can remove it outside, preferably in the garden. You have to bury the pot in the ground or on the terrace or balcony. Water is a very important factor for azaleas. It requires more and more water, especially in summer. Watering too much or stagnation in saucer should be avoided! Watering can be done directly on the substrate or by infiltration. Watering and spraying should be done with fine soft water, even the rain water is ideal.

It is best to avoid watering with tap water, as azaleas do not support scale from the water. The substrate must have a high content of organic matter and high water retention capacity. During flowering, the plant must be fertilized with mineral solutions in very low concentrations, once to every two weeks and not more.
