If you’ve just had your new turf laid and you’re determined to keep that freshly laid look there are several tips you must be aware of.
First of all you’ll need to provide your lawn with the right amount of nutrients, water and sunlight; the three keys ingredients vital to plants in order for them to grow and remain healthy. There are many lawn feeders available, each of them with a different key ingredient but the general rule of lawn feeding is to feed it twice yearly. During the warmer months it is important that your lawn has a feed rich in nitrogen and in the colder months a feed high in phosphate and potash. You can purchase your own lawn feeding equipment from any garden store but this service is also available via many landscape gardeners.
As well as feeding your lawn, you’ll want to remove any weeds that inevitably appear over time. You can also apply a weed killer to your lawn at the same time as its feed.
Once you’ve feed and watered your grass and removed as many weeds as possible, it is time to mow your lawn. As with any lawn regular cutting is essential to keep it looking its best. Not only will it look better but it also stimulates growth and will, over time, produce thicker grass. Infrequent mowing can also cause the quality of your lawn to decline and become prone to weeds and disease.
If you’ve only just had your turf laid you will need to wait for the roots to become established to the ground before you begin to cut your grass. This usually takes approximately 3 weeks.
You will need to make sure that the blades on your grass cutter are sharp as blunt blades can damage your lawn. Always cut your lawn when it is dry as it will be a lot easier and quicker. Once you’ve cut your glass it is also important to remove the clippings and bags these as they can become ideal breeding grounds for rotting organisms and disease.
Some people also really like the look of a striped lawn. This gives the appearance of having two different colour grasses laid side by side. This is an easily achievable look and something you will be able to recreate at home time and time again. Basically all you need to create this look is to have the first line of grass laid flat in one direction and the second line of grass to be laid flat in the opposite direction. As the light reflects of the blades of grass it gives the appearance of two different shades; the strip of grass that is pointing away from you appears darker and the strip of grass pointing towards you looks lighter. In order to achieve this look you’ll need to purchase a lawn mower with in built rollers that flatten the grass as it cuts.
