Either you are having seasonal plants or evergreen species, your plants demands your attention and care. You balcony garden seems lovely and lively until you take proper care of it. Once you show any careless attitude, your balcony become shabby, with a floor of dead leaves and wilted plants. Flowering plants usually withered with time and require regular trimming. Dead heads, dead leaves and broken or diseased stems should be removed to encourage fresh growth. This will not only keep the plant healthy but also make it look adorable and lively with fresh appearance. It is really not a bad idea to have a thorough cleaning of your balcony once in a year to give your balcony garden a new fresh look. Use heavy duty vacuum cleaners to clean the entire balcony, remove the containers from their places and have a thorough cleaning and washing.
It is the magnificence of contained garden that you can replace the off seasoned plant with new plants quite comfortably. You can add plants of your interest in every season. Important point here to focus on is to remove the dead and diseased plants right away as they may introduce a disease to soil with the process of its decay.
Repotting Plants
As the plants grow, the more prominent of them outgrow their containers and need an immediate potting onto a larger container with fresh compost. It is not that simple to re pot the plant. You need to check certain things like season or plants resting period etc. The best time of repotting a plant is right before the beginning of new growing season - the time when plants are in resting phase. Make sure that the new container has an extra space of 4 cm for root growth. It is important to note that too large container will as effective as a small container in preventing the growth of the plant.
Sometimes, you don't have room for large containers. In that case, you can simply reduce the size of the root ball to limit its growth. Use a pair of sharp scissors to cut the dead roots of about 5 cm (2 inches) and repot it in a same container with fresh compost exactly as you pot a new plant.
Staking Plants
Staking is usually used for tall plants to avoid any wind damage. For instance, split canes or lengths of slender bamboo are pushed into the soil and green twine (used for soft stemmed plants) or covered metal ties (used for woody plants) are used to tie them. Different metal supports are available in the market, which are used to support the small plants as they are in the process of growth; they grow up through these supports.
