In their backyard in Medford, Oregon, Colleen and Byron Arndt longed for a vegetable garden yet had neither enough sun nor space for one. But with roughly half a sunny acre in front, they decided to replace the lawn with a garden that included ample space for vegetables.

Because the space was visible from the street, the Arndts wanted a design that complemented the architecture of their 1920s Dutch colonial home. Landscape architects Kerry KenCairn and Laurie Sager identified the area with the best sun exposure and designed a formal garden around that space, incorporating raised beds for vegetables as well as a fountain, paths, grape arbor, and fruit trees. The Arndts grow corn, lettuce, artichokes, peppers, tomatoes, and other vegetables in 621 square feet of bed space.
