Grass Gardens

Let the grass grow freely or trim it occasionally with scissors to the desired height.

Use any container you like, such as a terra-cotta pot, a shallow pot saucer, or a seed-starting flat. Vary the accessories to fit different moods or themes. Tuck in colorful ceramic eggs for spring, tiny flowers for summer, or wee pumpkins for fall. Give the patch another look entirely by varying your choice of the groundcover. Plant moss that you dig up from your yard by sculpting the soil into hillocks and laying the moss over the surface. Other choices include low-growing baby's tears, creeping thyme, or succulents, such as living stones or sedum.

Light: High Time: 1 hour Skill: Easy

What You Need:

  • Rectangular wood box or flat
  • Potting soil
  • Wheatgrass seed
  • Plant mister
  • Votive candles in holders

Instructions:

Change the accents in your grass garden to complement the season or holiday.

1. Start two weeks before you want to display the grass garden. Fill the flat with potting soil to within 1 inch of the rim. Sow wheatgrass seeds thickly over the surface and cover with about a quarter-inch of soil.

2. Thoroughly moisten the soil using a plant mister. Place the flat in a sunny location, such as a south-facing window. Keep the soil moist but not wet by misting it regularly.

3. When the grass has reached 2 inches tall, tuck in the votive candles or other decorations.

Tip: Turn 3-inch terra-cotta pots into individual grass gardens to line a windowsill or mantel or to mark place settings at a holiday dinner.
